In his article, Jared Spool talks about postheroic leadership in UX. Rather than being the design guru coming up with brilliant ideas saving the world, the leadership he describes is about second order effects. How can we lead such that the design capacity and outcomes of individuals and the organization are increased?
His examples contain the elements of the executive’s trinity:
- Directing: formulate design intent through guiding design principles as north star; create a shared understanding to explain the WHY
- Managing: embed designers into product teams
- Leading: teaching teams to apply user research; let teams take ownership for design
